How to find clients for a small business

Word of mouth is comfortable but fragile: you don't control it. Here's how to build a client flow that depends on you, not on luck.

“I get clients by word of mouth” is where almost everyone starts. The problem is that word of mouth is outside your control: it comes when it comes, and in the months when it doesn’t, you’re stuck. You need a way to bring in clients when you decide to.

Not ten channels done badly: one done well

The most common mistake is trying everything at once — Instagram, search, flyers, trade shows — and doing all of it halfway. It’s better to pick one channel, the one where your clients actually are, and work it consistently until it produces. Then you add a second.

Where your clients actually are (not “everywhere”)

You don’t need to be everywhere: you need to be where they look. Be honest about it — if your clients never open a given platform, posting there is not a channel, it’s a hobby.

The rule of 100

A simple way to stop leaving clients to chance: every day, 100 targeted contact actions. Messages to potential clients, useful content, calls, requests for an introduction. They don’t all have to work: consistency is what creates the flow.

Turn one client into two

The cheapest client to find is the one an existing client brings you. After a job that went well, ask for a review and an introduction. It costs nothing, and it’s the channel with the highest trust attached to it.

When a channel isn’t worth it

Some channels simply don’t fit your business, and it’s better to say so early. If one client is worth a small amount to you and the channel needs weeks of work or a real budget per client acquired, that channel will drain you before it pays you. Drop it and put the effort into the one that reaches your clients faster and cheaper.

Vanteohelps you pick the right channel for your business and build the plan to work it — and it remembers your business between conversations, so you’re not starting from scratch every time.

Frequently asked questions

What's the fastest way to find clients?

Pick the one channel where your clients already are and work it properly, instead of spreading yourself across ten. One channel done seriously beats ten done halfway.

What is the rule of 100?

A simple method: every day you make 100 targeted contact actions — messages, calls, useful posts, referral requests — aimed at the right people. Consistency creates a predictable flow instead of leaving it to word of mouth.

Paid advertising or word of mouth?

Word of mouth is excellent but you don't control it. Advertising brings clients on demand but it costs money. Early on, one organic channel done well — content, referrals, being present where your clients look — is usually the better bet, then test ads with a small budget.

Vanteo does it with you.
